Coulter Architects is a Lake Chelan-based design practice, with an office in Bellevue, serving the West side as well as the East side including the Methow Valley, Chelan Valley, and Wenatchee area. Founded on the ideas that buildings can serve as a bridge between us and nature, as well as culture, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Led by Ron Coulter, the firm’s work can be found across the northwest, with wide ranging projects such as convention centers; hospitals and surgery centers; office buildings; homes of distinction; cultural and civic centers; urban design and planning, and interior design.
If you asked us what business we are really in....we would say we are in the quality of life business. We do this with ideas......we solve the programmatic issues that provide the needed space, but in a value added way providing the qualities that raise and enhance our emotional awareness......communication and design, linked together, which is the best way to change things for the better.
Since moving the practice from the Mercer Island area to the Lake Chelan area, we have concentrated on Homes of distinction.... and smaller Commercial Projects .... including boutique hotels and convention/ event center type spaces.
In both the Mercer Island and Washington Park areas of Seattle, we also built custom homes for our own account, providing homes as the client, the architect, and the builder. We found difficult sites that were less desirable for the market place, and turned obstacles into opportunities, creating unique homes with stimulating results. We have accumulated an extensive expertise in steep and complex sites including soils issues.
We don't act as general contractors anymore, but have the valuable background that it provided to enhance our understanding of the process and the engineering. We also apply our 45 years of experience to energy efficient and sustainable designs and have used techniques such as prefabricated structural insulated panels.
